Hi all.

Last weekend while doing coolant flush I have removed the water pump from the engine case to wash it. The water pump has a shaft behind it, this shaft goes into engine case with a rubber oring. After install all back and went for short ride, I noticed some oil drops at bottom behind the water pump, probably oil leak out from that rubber oring.

Yesterday I opened the pump again, inspected the oring, it looks fine, anyway I replaced with new thicker oring, it seems very tight fit to the shaft as well as the engine case. But then still oil leak, though it is a little reduced.

Tomorrow I am going to check it again. Actually the leak is very less, difficult to inspect where exactly it come from. Should I put some engine gasket sealant on that oring?

Thanks.

Hi mgdaubo,

Sorry to hear about your oil leak.

When you re-fitted the water pump did you discard the old O-ring and fit a new genuine Honda manufactured water pump O-ring?

Re-using the old O-ring will result in a leak - you must fit a new O-ring.

Replacing the old O-ring with a new O-ring which is not an official Honda water pump O-ring can also result in a leak (I know this from experience). You must use a new genuine Honda O-ring.

Hornet 250 1996 - 2007 requires the following O ring serial number which fits on the end of the water pump (figure 12):

Thanks HOON98.

You are absolutely right, now I can confirm the leak is from that O-ring only.
Getting a new genuine Honda water pump O-ring here in my place is difficult, so I have tried:
- Reuse old O-ring: leak
- Not official Honda O-ring: leak.

I am going to try not official Honda O-ring with engine gasket sealant (silicon glue for rubber O-ring), if it fails I will have to find the genuine one.

Good luck with the gasket sealant - hopefully it will stop the oil leak.

If this does not work out and you cannot obtain the genuine Honda O-ring then try and source as close a size O-ring as possible to the original Honda item.

The dimensions for the Honda water pump O-ring are 32.95mm X 2.62mm.

If you have an auto or engineering shop local to you see if they have an O ring the same or similar size to this.

Update: none genuine Honda Oring with sealant did reduce leakage a lot, but still not perfect, there is still one oil drop per day under the bike.
I will have to look for similar Honda oring at local shops here.

Thanks HOON98 for the dimensions :)

No problem mgdaubo. :D

If you cannot get the O-ring locally then try ordering it off the internet from a Honda parts supplier - just quote them the part number and they can send it to you via international postage.
