Hi mate - you need to be using both the 'T' and the 'I' mark on the timing rotor when checking valve clearances and timing:

Step 1

'T' mark on timing rotor needs to be aligned with index mark on rotor cover (with cam sprockets in correct 'IN' 'EX' orientation - see pic above) for checking clearance on #1 + #3 cylinder INTAKE valves.

Step 2

Turn engine 180 degrees clockwise (half turn) so that now the 'I' mark on the timing rotor points straight up (at 0 degrees) - now check clearance on #2 + #4 cylinder EXHAUST valves.

Step 3

Turn engine 180 degrees clockwise (half turn) so that 'T' mark on timing rotor is aligned with index mark on rotor cover - now check clearance on #2 + #4 cylinder INTAKE valves.

Step 4

Turn engine 180 degrees clockwise (half turn) so that now the 'I' mark on the timing rotor points straight up (at 0 degrees) - now check clearance on #1 + #3 EXHAUST valves.
