Has anyone ever done a real-world comparison of the two bikes? I.e. has anyone owned both to do an actual comparison using similar riding styles?

Just curious as online reckon 600 is better, garage reckons not much difference as 600 needs revving and so on.

Probably depends more on the year of 600 and it's state of tune than anything else.
My 99 600 had a pipe on it, was dyno'd, perfect A/F ratio so was running as well as could be expected. It would go on to reserve at 110 miles most days, under 100 if thrashed. The 900 I had (pipes & PC3) would do 140 miles at worst before the light came on. Same riding speed\style on both.

Even accounting for the 16L tank on the 600 & 19L on the niner, it was still worse. I would think the later FI 600's are better on fuel so likely not much in it there, I'm sure someone will be along to advise on those :)

I wish I could get 140 miles on my 900. On about 105-110 at the moment, but that is London stop start for you...

Ah yes forgot to mention, mostly fast A-roads with a bit of motorway thrown in, much better for the MPG!

Ive ridden a 900 for years...in various states of tune. Ive also ridden a lot of miles with guys who have 600's, when we have been on a rideout most of the time there is not alot of differance between how much money's worth of fuel we would put in our fuel tanks.
Sometimes i would put less in sometimes they would, and this is on the same roads at the same time.
At cruising speeds theres not a lot in it but playtime the 900 can be better at times as you dont have to work it so hard.

My 900 is nearly bog standard but on a decent run with mixed speeds up to 120+ im getting 54mpg,well on the last run of 156 miles any way. I am more than happy with the fuel consumption. Oldgit

I would be thrilled if I got 54mpg. I'm on about 30-32 at the mo... but this does go up when I take it out for a proper spin.

Thats really good.On the same trip at the same speeds i get 40 out of my 9 and 44 from my old 6er.Thats 5 miles of 60 limit(ish) :lol and 3miles through town.

My 900 has an average fuel consuption of 6.32 l/100km in the 45000km it has. That's an average tank mileage of 150mi until the panic light turns on.

on my 99 ( T ) plate 6er with scorpion can and no other engine related mods i get approx 100 - 110 miles on a full tank, ( before res ) this can alter + / - slightly depending on ride style, pillion, weather conditions etc :)

But the 600s made it to the petrol station without running out of fuel. :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin

Amazingly, according to real-world user-supplied data, the average consumptions seem to be the same, 5.55 litres per 100km. Data for 600 is on http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/ ... B_600.html and for 900 on http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/ ... B_900.html

It makes some sense: since the 900 engine is more powerful, it needs to be pushed less for the same performance and perhaps operates in a more frugal regime. A similar situation is with the old BMW 5 series E34, where 520i (2 litre engine) uses on average more petrol than 525i (2.5 litre engine).

I have my 9er with me couple of years now and I commute daily to work on the bike. On average, with mix town stop and go plus fast highways, I usually got 150miles per fill up (from full to the brim fill-up until the fuel-light pings on). That is on average of 18kms/L or around 50.8 mile/gal (UK).

I dont know about the 600 as I never owned one.

I am a heavy guy (100kgs) :Bang and I think for a lighter rider, the MPG can be better... :pissed

I've had both, thrash the 600 and fuel consumption is pretty horrific,I once had the fuel light come on after 80 miles from full!! More usually it'd do about 120.My 9 will usually have the light flickering at just over 130,that's riding to work through the city and a decent ride down fairly quiet A roads into Cornwall at least once a week.On longer runs it uses far less, during one long cruise i actually thought the light had failed and filled up anyway only to find I had plenty of fuel left.On a recent 200 mile ride with a mate, mostly out in the sticks and not hanging about he worked out I was getting 50 to the gallon and that was "giving it some" without going too stupid.

I worry sometimes with my 900, with the 600 I was looking for petrol stations at around 110 miles, with the 900 I have regularly got 165+ miles from a brim full tank without the light coming on. I know the light works as it was on when I picked it up from the dealers :Bad . I am not a saint, I enjoy play time as much as anyone else, and the mileage seems to be about the same each trip.

Cheers,

A couple of weeks ago I had a decent run up to Durham, stayed over night then across to Helmesly and back home. some quick riding including a decent streach at over 100mph and the light came on at 181 miles ( tank was brimmed on the stand) on the 900 Hornet, average worked out at about 45 miles per gallon. My 900 averaged 48mpg over a 400km trip at 100-110kmph steady throttle.

The return trip (400km again) I was using the gears/revs more at 110kmph mainly, and dropped to 46mpg.

This was all "open road" as we call it here (100kmph zone) with plenty of hills / twisties (New Zealand).

I'm about 100kg (geared up) and sit quite tall on the bike so probably not the most economical of riders which makes me pretty happy with these numbers.

I decided to check fuel consumption at the weekend again. Mixed riding up to ind 120 in places and covered 155.5 miles, measured fuel into tank was exactly 13 litres which works out at 57mpg so still very happy with the 900 Hornet. Oldgit

That happened to me on my 600 as well - I couldn't believe it at the time, although it was a very hairy ride with a mate on a VFR, who I finally let go into the distance when I looked down and saw 120 on the speedo through the Scottish Borders. It is exceedingly dangerous to follow a better, braver, madder rider and get taken beyond the comfort zone without realising it. The 600 had a fairing, but my 919 has only the wee headlight bubble screen, so now I can rely upon wind blast to keep me aware when I am going too fast, I see it as a safety feature. Having said that, whilst I really love the bigger one's torque, I think I actually had more fun keeping the wee one buzzing at high revs.

Morning Fatget, I fill my 900 whilst the bike is on front and rear stands to within 1/2" of the top of the neck. This way I can get nearly 200 smiles to a tank. When I had my Ducati S4R (996cc) I couldn't do my Sunday run without stopping for fuel on the way back even with the tank brimmed to full and was one of the reasons why I bought the Hornet was the tank size. Cheers, John (oldgit919)

Ayup John, I recently filled up right to the brim witht the bike on the centre stand, I will see how far it goes this time. I will be amazed if I get anything like 200 miles though.

Had a run up to Bridlington, Scarborough, Malton, Pickering and surrounding area yesterday.
I filled up before I went but didn't quite brim it and was surprised to do 164 miles before the reserve light came on :eek
I was starting to think that the bulb had blown :Pray
That's the most mileage I've covered on a hornet before I've hit reserve :mic
It certainly surprised me....in a good way :D

I cant remember exactley but I have had three 600s and one 900, Powerwise theres not a great deal of difference between a 600 and a 900, I think its about 10-15 BHP difference, the tank is bigger on the 900 than the earlier 600s, I remember getting about 30-40 miles more out of the 900, thats both being ragged.

This summer i made a new record for me, 4.96l/100km... that's 300km until the light. We were 3 bikes throught some twisties and passes, but we couldn't ride because were going to explode because of the big meal, and as we say in Spain, we were "stepping on eggs".

I've had one 600 and now have one 900, and they are completely different bikes. The 900 is far more involving, challenging, sometimes scary, brutal, whilst the 600 is a wee chuck-it-about revvy, have-a-go nutter.

I felt safer on the 600.
